Briggs appointed as Harmony CEO

Posted: Wed, 02 Jan 2008

[miningmx.com] -- GRAHAM BRIGGS has been appointed as Harmony Gold's new full-time CEO out of a list of 36 candidates after the surprise departure of Bernard Swanepoel last year.

Briggs, who headed up Harmony's Australian operations, was appointed as acting CEO when Swanepoel resigned in early August after warning the market to expect a dismal quarter and a large accounting software mess.

"Graham proved to be the outstanding candidate and we are pleased to announce that the board has unanimously appointed him as Chief Executive Officer as from 1 January 2008," said Patrice Motsepe, Harmony's chairman.

"He has been overseeing the introduction of the Harmony "back to basics" management style and has done a great job. Harmony is on its way to being the globally competitive and profitable company that we know it can be."

Harmony has struggled to turn a profit over recent years. Briggs has started a process of cutting back costs, revisiting the continuous operations method of working at most of the company's mines and is talking of bringing in a partner for its Papua New Guinea projects.

Harmony is also looking to exit its more marginal operations, but retain some upside through royalty agreements.

A selection panel comprising four non-executive directors at the company sifted through 36 potential candidates from South Africa and abroad for the position. A final four were invited for formal interviews.
