UPDATED-Glenn Agliotti arrested for Kebble murder

Posted: Thu, 16 Nov 2006

[miningmx.com] -- Businessman Glenn Agliotti has been arrested by the elite South African Scorpions unit for the murder of former mining boss Brett Kebble in September 2005 who was shot dead in his car, the Scorpions said on Thursday.

"The Directorate of Special Operations (DSO, Scorpions) this morning arrested a Mr. Glen Agliotti in connection with the murder of Johannesburg businessman, Brett Kebble. The arrest is one leg of an ongoing DSO investigation into organised crime," the unit said in a statement.

Agliotti, facing charges of murder and conspiracy to murder, appeared briefly in the Johannesburg Magistrates Court. The matter was postponed to 8 December when he will be charged and have to opportunity to apply for bail, the statement said.
There will be more arrests
Agliotti was questioned at a central Johannesburg police station after his arrest early in the morning.

The Scorpions unit is separate from the police. The two law enforcement agencies will work together on the murder investigation and prosecution.

"There will be more arrests which would be best dealt with in a co-operative relationship between the DSO and SAPS (South African Police Service)," the Scorpions said. Kebble was the chief executive of Western Areas, JCI and Randgold & Exploration. In August of last year he was pushed off the Western Areas and JCI boards. Subsequent forensic audits have uncovered a massive web of fraud and theft amounting to billions of rands from these three companies.

Kebble was shot dead on the night of 28 September 2005. There has been criticism of the way the police handled the investigation immediately after the murder, with Kebble's Mercedes Benz firstly being removed from the scene of the crime to a police station before a forensic investigation and then the removal of the car from police possesion by Clinton Nassif, who had provided security and investigative services to JCI.

Nassif was arrested in late October for insurance fraud shortly before he left South Africa to set up a business in the United States. The Mail & Guardian weekly newspaper speculated his arrest would be central to unravelling the Kebble murder and that Nassif might have turned state witness.

Nassif and Agliotti are reported to be close.

Agliotti has been linked to national police commissioner Jackie Selebi, with Agliotti's diary seized by the Scorpions in September detailing dates and times of meetings between the two men, South Africa's Sunday Times reported on 12 November. Selebi has repeatedy said the relationship is one of friendship.

Agliotti's home was raided as part of a criminal investigation into a R250-million drug bust, racketeering, money-laundering and corruption, the Sunday Times reported.

Agliotti is reported by the Mail & Guardian to have acted as a consultant for JCI.

Born in 1964 Springs, a satellite mining town near Johannesburg, Brett Kebble was the first son of Roger Kebble, a well known mining entrepreneur.
