Rain not affecting deliveries – RBCT

[miningmx.com] — Johannesburg – Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT), the world’s single largest coal-export terminal, said on Wednesday that the persistent heavy rains had not stopped export coal from being delivered to the privately owned port.

Recently, a downpour at Sheepmoor, between Ermelo and Vryheid, led to the cancellation of 18 trains of export coal, contributing to the depletion of stockpiles at the RBCT.

Zama Luthuli, spokesperson for RTMC, said the terminal had been receiving trains in spite of the rains.

The stock at the RBCT is still above two million tonnes.

Stockpiles dropped to about 1.7 million tonnes due to derailments and rains since December.

Since these interruptions, the RBCT has been building up the stockpile.

The normal stockpile is between four and five million tonnes.

“We are still receiving trains,” Luthuli said. “Persistent rains don’t seem to have had an impact.”

Mike Asefovitz, a spokesperson for Transnet Freight Rail (TRF) confirmed that rains had had no effect on the traffic.

“Trains are running on schedule,” he said.

TRF provides a railway service linking coal mines in the Mpumalanga coal fields to the RBCT.
