Seven injured at Gold Fields Driefontein

[miningmx.com] — THE National Union of Mineworkers on Monday reported that seven mineworkers had been injured at Gold Fields’ (GFI) Driefontein mine outside Carletonville.

The trade union said the incident occurred on Monday morning.

“Three were trapped and later rescued and sent to hospital after a seismic event measuring 2.7 magnitude on the richter scale hit the mine at 05:00 this morning,” said
NUM.

An additional four miners were also trapped later when a second seismic event
measuring 2.9 magnitude on the richter scale hit the mine at 07:00.

These mineworkers were rescued and sent to hospital.

The NUM reiterated the need to have well functioning seismic monitoring systems in South African mines.

The trade union called on the industry to implement these systems without delay.
