[miningmx.com] -- Trade union Solidarity on Thursday announced plans to apply for an interdict against Metorex's antimony and gold producer Consolidated Murchison Mine (Cons Murch) outside Phalaborwa after the mine started with the retrenchment of about 235 employees.
"These retrenchments are being done without any consultations as prescribed by the Labour Relations Act. Solidarity maintains that the process should be halted so that the correct procedures can be followed," the trade union said in a statement.
According to the trade union, this not the first time this year that employees are being retrenched at this company this year.
It said nearly 350 employees were retrenched in March.
Solidarity said the Section 189 notice issued to employees regarding the planned retrenchment states that the management aims to sell the mine as soon as possible.
Solidarity spokesperson Jaco
Kleynhans said the trade union was "extremely dissatisfied" with the manner in which the retrenchment process is being handled.
He said employees were simply informed of the planned retrenchments last week and were told that the final payment date would be made on Wednesday next week.
"Meanwhile, the company is absolutely refusing to consult about the planned retrenchments and is now trying to finalise the process as quickly as possible. If management gets its way, it would mean that the employees concerned could be retrenched within a matter of only two weeks after being informed of the planned retrenchments," said Kleynhans.
Cons Murch is the only producer of antimony in South Africa and produces about 8% of the world's antimony.
