Gold Fields to derisk South Deep

[miningmx.com] – GOLD Fields said it was considering two possible changes in mining method at its South Deep mine that would accelerate the progress to nameplate capacity of between 650,000 to 700,000 ounces of gold a year.

Bloomberg News and BDLive quoted Gold Fields CEO, Nick Holland, as saying that both methods if successful would derisk the project which is two years late and has been difficult to commission for a number of its previous owners including JCI and Placer Dome.

“Both of these methods, if successful, could significantly derisk the South Deep build-up plan and future production profiles, and have a meaningful impact on costs,” Holland is quoted to have said.

South Deep is currently expected to reach break-even by mid-2015 and full capacity at the end of the 2017 financial year.
