Miners exempt from Zambia power hike

[miningmx.com] – MINING firms would be exempt from a sharp increase in the electricity tariff in Zambia, said Reuters.

The average price of electricity was raised to 10.35 US cents per kilowatt hour (KWh) from 6 US cents per KWh with immediate effect with the aim of generating revenue for investment in additional supply.

“The proposed tariff adjustment is expected to generate revenue that will facilitate investment of $3.7bn in generation projects, thereby adding capacity of 1,500MW to the national grid,” said Zambia’s state power utility, Zesco.
