Congo exceeds Zambia in copper output

[miningmx.com] – COPPER production from the Democratic Republic of Congo (Congo) exceeded Zambia for the first time, said Bloomberg News citing preliminary figures from market consultancy, CRU Group.

The Congo produced 846,000 tonnes of copper in 2013 which was 2% higher than Zambia, CRU Group is reported to have said. There is also significant scope for a doubling in production from both countries in the next decade, CRU Group said.

“This is potential production from projects and it is highly unlikely that it will all come on stream – realistically only 50% to 60% of it will,’ said Piotr Ortonowski, a copper consultant at CRU Group.

“It will be the nations’ ability to provide a favorable investment environment to mine-project developers that will determine which will be the most successful,’ he told Bloomberg News.
