Miners strike at Implats’ Marula mine

[miningmx.com] – IMPALA Platinum (Implats) confirmed it had suffered a work stoppage at its Marula platinum mine on July 4 by workers affiliated with the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM).

Johan Theron, Implats spokesperson, told Reuters the stoppage appeared to be “… in relation to the AMCU settlement” adding the workers were “… unhappy with the wage deal that they got last year.’

South Africa’s main platinum producers, Implats, Anglo American Platinum and Lonmin last month agreed to increase wages for members of the Association of Mineworkers & Construction Union (AMCU) following a five-month strike.

An NUM spokesman in Limpopo, William Mabapa, told Reuters that the union had not called any strike, but that some miners had not gone to work owing to “intimidation’ by other workers.
