[miningmx.com] – THE National Union of Mineworkers general-secretary, Frans Baleni said mine membership remained fluid with rival union, the Association of Mineworkers & Construction Union losing followers.
BDLive, citing Baleni, said that miners leaving AMCU were, however, joining smaller unions or preferring not to be unionised at all. He added that NUM members would have to protect themselves if law enforcement agencies failed to do so.
“The NUM members cannot run forever, if the law enforcement agency fails us, we must defend ourselves,” he said. Baleni’s comments come amid a growing incidence of violence on South Africa’s mines, especially in the platinum sector which was recently subjected to a five month strike.
