[miningmx.com] -- Zimbabwe's nickel production fell by a quarter to 6,354 tonnes last year with platinum miners for the first time accounting for the bulk of the output, data from the country's Chamber of Mines showed on Friday.
Mwana Africa's nickel mine producer, Bindura Nickel Corp, the only nickel intergrated miner, smelter and refinery in Africa shut down last November due to falling nickel prices and operational problems, but the company plans to reopen it soon.
Nickel output in Zimbabwe has been falling since 2004.
"Production from PGM (platinum group metals) operations for the first time became the main producer of nickel contributing 58.97 percent of total nickel production," the mining chamber said in a report.
