SA to re-establish top ferrochrome spot

[miningmx.com] – SOUTH Africa would re-establish itself as the world’s largest ferrochrome producer within five years, said Reuters citing comments by Chris Jordaan, CEO of UK-listed ferrochrome company, International Ferro Metals (IFM).

In an article republished by BDLive, Reuters said South Africa’s share of world production of ferrochrome, a steel feedstock, had slumped 15% to 32% of the 4.8 million tonnes produced globally, putting it second behind China.

“South Africa will regain its leading position as top ferrochrome producer in the world,” said Jordaan. “A number of us have reduced our costs so we can place alloy into China cheaper than the Chinese can produce,” he told Reuters.
