BHP, ArcelorMittal seek Liberia access

[miningmx.com] – BHP Billiton and ArcelorMittal have applied jointly to export iron ore through Liberia from Guinea as a prelude to a transaction in which the steelmaker will buy BHP’s Nimba iron ore project.

Bloomberg News said BHP wants to arrange for ore to be transported using a railway line and port controlled by ArcelorMittal, citing three people familiar with the application.

The two companies tried to combine their iron ore mining projects which straddle the Liberia and Guinea border in 2010 but were unsuccessful. The Wall Street Journal reported in May that ArcelorMittal was nearing the purchase of BHP’s Nimba mine, Bloomberg News said.
