Matona to subject Eskom to close Govt control

[miningmx.com] – NEWLY appointed Eskom CEO, Tshediso Matona, is likely to subject the utility to even tighter scrutiny of the South African government, said BDLive citing comments made by Matona hours before his appointment.

Matona, current director-general of Public Enterprises, said of Eskom prior to his appointment: “We will watch this thing like hawks”.

The delays in Eskom’s new build programme could have been avoided if it had been more transparent with the government, he said.

Public Enterprises minister, Lynne Brown, made Matona’s appointment public in Cape Town on August 20, saying that he was familiar with the running of state-owned companies. “Matona has been involved in providing oversight to Eskom and the other companies in the department’s portfolio for the past three years,’ Brown said.

Matona, who also served as Director General of Trade and Industry, cut his teeth in government as a trade negotiator in Geneva at the World Trade Organisation.

He takes over from Collin Matjila who was appointed shortly after Brian Dames, a long-time employee of Eskom, stepped down.
