500 down tools at Glencore’s Koornfontein

[miningmx.com] – ABOUT 500 workers belonging to the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) went on strike at Glencore’s Koornfontein coal mine after failing to agree on compensation offered for planned job cuts, said Bloomberg News.

Citing Glencore spokesman, Gugulethu Maqetuka, Bloomberg News said Glencore had offered retrenchment packages to employees after deciding to restructure the mine. A NUM spokesman said the union would consider applying for a secondary strike.

“We are being undermined and we will make sure they feel the pinch,” said the NUM’s Highveld regional secretary, Stanley Lebelo. “We are also intending to apply for a secondary strike from other Glencore operations,” he added.
