Diamond market ‘spooked: GEM’s Elphick

[miningmx.com] – ROUGH diamond prices are expected to be under pressure this year owing to the closure of Antwerp Diamond Bank which has “spooked the market”, said Bloomberg News citing GEM Diamonds CEO, Clifford Elphick.

“There’s been some liquidity issues in the diamond arena with the closing of the Antwerp Diamond Bank which was a major financier of diamond traders in Antwerp,’ Elphick said. “The net effect is that it has spooked the market a little bit.’

Rough diamond prices fell 6.9% in the last three months of 2014, after advancing about 30% in the past five years. “The general feeling in the market is for a slight weakness’ this year, said Elphick.
