Niger to build nuclear as uranium prices fall

[miningmx.com] – NIGER is to build a nuclear plant in order to capitalise on its uranium resources, said Bloomberg News citing the comments of the African country’s presidential adviser on energy and mining, Salamatou Djibo Gourouza.

“We have been exporting raw materials without realizing the expected benefits as prices dropped after Fukushima,’ said Gourouza. “Nuclear plants are a better way of ensuring our country gets real benefit from the massive uranium deposits.’

Export prices of the fuel fell following the 2011 Fukushima disaster in Japan. Niger accounted for 8% of global uranium output in 2011, ranking as the fourth-largest producer, according to the US Geological Survey.
