Glencore starts laying off Zambia workers

[miningmx.com] – GLENCORE has started laying off workers at its Zambia copper operations Mopani Copper Mines, said Reuters.

Company sources told the newswire that the Swiss-headquartered group had started to hand out letters of redundancy. It is thought Glencore intends to cut staff at the mine by 4,300 while 5,000 contract workers might also be affected.

“The company started giving out the letters of redundancy yesterday and has continued with the exercise today,” one union official said, referring to Glencore unit Mopani Copper Mines, told Reuters.
