Zambia does not plan to run copper mines

Edgar Lungu, president, Zambia

[miningmx.com] – THE Zambian government would not take over mines where there had been heavy job losses, said Reuters citing the comments of the southern African country’s president, Edgar Lungu.

“The government can run the mines but we have no intention to take over the mines,” said Lungu. “We would have lost all the jobs if we insisted on no job losses. The mines have told us why these jobs are being lost,” he said.

Glencore and Vedanta Resources have started cutting thousands of permanent and contractor jobs at their copper mines in Zambia. Copper accounts for 70% of Zambia’s export earnings, said Reuters.
