Cynthia Carroll's aggressive approach will be seen in coal too - Ian Cockerill, CEO Anglo Coal

In an interview on 702 @ 18:15 on 8 April 2008

[miningmx.com] -- ANGLO American's coal business will grow and move into downstream businesses as part of CEO Cynthia Carroll's as part of the new drive she's bought to the company, said Ian Cockerill, newly appointed CEO of Anglo Coal.

"You have seen what has happened over the last year since Cynthia has taken over. I think there has been a much more aggressive approach from Anglo-American, you know, taking some very key positions in some very strategic metals," Cockerill said on The World at Six, a week-nightly radio programme.

"As far as coal is concerned, there clearly is an intent to try and increase the global footprint of the existing coal business but more importantly, looking at downstream activities, looking at clean coal technologies and other associated technologies around coal, around the broader energy sector, and that is what I think is going to be particularly exciting," said Cockerill who takes up the position in June.

Cockerill left Gold Fields CEO position after six years at the helm.

"I have been associated with gold on and off for well over 30 years and as such, I looked upon this as a wonderful opportunity to move into something different," he said.

"It was time to sort of find a fresh challenge and create some space for the people behind me and this opportunity came along in the coal sector," he said.

"So to be associated with a company which has got an incredibly fine asset base as Anglo Coal has got but where Anglo-American want to use this asset base and grow it into something a lot more significant that is the particular challenge which I said earlier that I found intriguing and that is what I find intriguing it is not just the thought of running a coal business but it is what that coal business can become."
