Zimbabwe gives miners six months to clear electricity bills

THE Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDS) has given mining companies and other debtors, including farmers, six months to tackle their arrears or risk being cut off or litigation, said Reuters.

Citing ZETDS, Reuters said the entity was owed more than $1bn by electricity users. In addition to domestic households and farmers, the company was also owed money by industries and mining companies.

“I know members will make all efforts to honour their dues because there is no one who can afford to have a mine closed,” said Isaac Kwesu, CEO of Zimbabwe’s Chamber of Mines. Zimbabwe currently produces 938 megawatts (MW) and imports up to 450MW from South Africa and Mozambique.
