Eskom

[miningmx.com] -- South African power utility Eskom said it has reached an "amicable resolution" with independent truck owners and coal transporters, which less than two weeks ago accused Eskom of reneging on coal transport agreements in favour of big companies.

Following meetings between Eskom management and the Coal Transporters Forum (CTF), Eskom said it was "pleased to report that agreement has been reached in respect of the demands underpinning the protest action", I-Net Bridge reported.

Protests by contracted coal movers, which are all small black business, disrupted traffic and coal delivery to Eskom power stations earlier this month.

Truck owners, who delivered a memorandum to Eskom CEO Jacob Maroga, said they were receiving pay based on tonnage delivered, but since Eskom had reduced their contracted tonnages, their businesses were suffering.

The truck owners said problems started escalating in September last year when bigger companies started getting most of the work. Now Eskom and the CTF have agreed on the tonnages to be transported by the Free on Truck segment of Eskom's Coal Transportation mix, which is the segment represented by the CTF.
