[miningmx.com] -- The 7,800 employees of Pamodzi’s Free State mines have received 100% of their April salaries, while employees of the group’s East Rand mines have now received 25% of their salaries for the month, trade union Solidarity said on Monday.

Solidarity said the attitude of the provisional liquidators played a big part in the payout of salaries. “The liquidators have said expressly that the payment of salaries would have happened much later in similar cases, but it is exactly because the panel realised how serious the social impact of the non-payment of salaries was on employees and their families that the payment was made from the funds currently available,” Solidarity spokesperson Jaco Kleynhans said.

“The conditions in the communities have already reached crisis proportions, but the payment that has been made will definitely relieve the pressure.”
