[miningmx.com] -- CRONIMET a German metals company may invest in a chrome smelter in South Africa.

Reuters quoted Guenter Pilarsky CEO of Cronimet as saying that now the privately owned company had substantial chrome ore mining rights in the Western Limb of the Bushveld in South Africa it is considering building a smelter.

Cronimet intends to begin mining chrome ore this year with production of 400,000 tonnes scheduled for the following year.

"We will be able to expand this in the coming years as the mine is large enough," Reuters reported Pilarsky said. "We have plans to increase this to 600,000 tonnes annually later and we also have plans to build a ferro-chrome smelter there or to acquire one."
