De Beers Posted: Tue, 06 Jan 2009 [miningmx.com] -- India's mines ministry has referred a mineral concession proposal by global diamond giant De Beers, which is 45% owned by global resources giant Anglo American, to the Andhra Pradesh state government for further perusal. Indian media reported at the weekend that De Beers was seeking a prospecting licence for over 60 square kilometres in Gooty reserved forest and Kurnool area of Andhra Pradesh. A proposal by India's largest private sector steel producer, Tata Steel, which was seeking a mining lease for minerals including manganese, was also referred to the state government. According to Indian website Livemint, Tata Steel had applied for a mining lease for more than 35 square kilometres in Srikakulam and Vizainagram areas of the state. In the meantime, the Indian mines ministry has approved a reconnaissance permit to global mining major Rio Tinto, whose exploration arm can now move ahead with work on a preliminary survey for diamonds and other precious minerals in the southern state of Madhya Pradesh.
