Congo Posted: Fri, 09 May 2008 [miningmx.com] -- CONGO'S copper and cobalt-mining Katanga province completed repairs to damaged power lines on Friday and lifted power consumption restrictions on mining and mineral processing companies, a provincial minister said, according to a Reuters report. Katanga's provincial government ordered companies on April 26 to restrict their electricity use to 40 percent of their needs following the theft of around 1,800 metres of power cables near the mining centre of Kolwezi, the newswire said. Repair work was completed at around 11.50 a.m. (0950 GMT), Minister Musoka Kasweshi said in a message to Reuters. Theft of power lines for sale is a frequent problem in parts of Democratic Republic of Congo, whose infrastructure is in ruins after decades of rule by late dictator Mobutu Sese Seko and war since his regime fell to a rebel advance in 1996, it said.
