NUM calls on minister to reject Northam deal

[miningmx.com] – THE National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) called on South Africa’s mines minister, Ngoako Ramatlhodi, to reject Northam Platinum’s R6.6bn empowerment deal unveiled yesterday as it was not broad-based enough.

“We .. call upon the Minister … to vehemently reject this transaction in its current format, as it will fail the most potent objective of the mining charter; which is meaningful economic participation for all the beneficiaries,” said the NUM.

The union, which staged an 11-week strike at Northam’s Zondereinde mine last year, also criticised Northam CEO, Paul Dunne, for not consulting the union properly ahead of the deal announcement.
