Strike at Anglo’s Kleinkopje into its third day

[miningmx.com] – PRODUCTION from Anglo American’s Kleinkopje thermal coal mine was at a standstill for a third day after the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) downed tools on April 7 – industrial action deemed “unprotected” as certain procedures had not been followed in terms of labour law.

“The mine has not been operating since Tuesday 7 April due to intimidation by NUM members,’ Anglo said in a statement. Kleinkopje produces about 3.9 million tonnes a year most of which is for export through the Richards Bay Coal Terminal.

The NUM is demanding the reversal of new practices that Anglo introduced to boost productivity and efficiency. These include the double-sided loading of trucks, which the NUM wants to stop until all safety concerns are addressed.
