Guinea to build $2bn hydroelectric dam

[miningmx.com] – WEST Africa’s Guinea was in talks with China International Water & Electric Corporation (CWE) to build a $2bn hydroelectric dam that would double the country’s electricity output and provide a boost to its bauxite mining ambitions, said Bloomberg News.

“The idea is to feed the mining industry,” Lansana Fofana, an energy ministry official,
and the head of the two hydropower projects in Guinea, told Bloomberg News. “We want to build refineries for our bauxite. We will even be able to position ourselves as an energy exporter,” he said.

The 550MW Souapiti dam would be CWE’s second project in the country, after it completed the 240MW Kaleta dam about 120 kilometers (75 miles) north of the capital, Conakry, in July, said Bloomberg News.
