Steenkamp appointed CEO of Harmony Gold

[miningmx.com] – HARMONY Gold said it had appointed Peter Steenkamp, formerly head of Sasol Mining, as its CEO, effective from January 1, 2016. He replaces Graham Briggs who announced in July he intended to retire.

“The board is very happy to welcome Peter back to Harmony,” said Patrice Motsepe, chairman of Harmony Gold in a statement. “Peter worked for Harmony for four years and his last position at the company was chief operating officer,” he said.

“He has more than thirty years’ experience in the mining industry and should lead Harmony to greater heights,” he added.

Said Steenkamp: “Returning to the gold sector and to Harmony is like coming home. The company has demonstrated its resilience during recent challenging times and has been positioned for profitability by the management team,” he said.

Steenkamp, a mining engineer, has also held executive positions at African Rainbow Minerals and Pamodzi Gold.
