Sibanye keen on third platinum deal

[miningmx.com] – SIBANYE Gold would seek a third platinum deal as it capitalised on low metal prices, said BDLive citing the comments of the precious metal firm’s CEO, Neal Froneman.

“We’d definitely like to do more in platinum as we’d like to do more in gold,” Froneman told the newspaper. “If the platinum markets remain as depressed as they are, it’s actually imperative that we follow through with further platinum sector consolidation, otherwise there are companies that will hit the wall,” he added.

Sibanye is currently waiting on regulatory approval for its proposed amalgamation with Aquarius Platinum and the purchase of Rustenburg Mines from Anglo American Platinum, transactions that carry a combined R9.5bn price tag.

“I don’t think we’d do anything while we still have outstanding regulatory approvals because that would conflict with our submissions,” said Froneman.

“But certainly, post-commission approvals, we’d want to move relatively quickly to make further inroads into the platinum sector,” he said.
