Petmin settles Somkhele wage strike

[miningmx.com] – PETMIN said a 37-day strike at its Somkhele anthracite mine had ended after agreeing to pay its lowest paid workers between 7.5% and 8% in a two-year wage deal.

Workers will return to work on October 28 and mining and processing activities would return to normal. Volunteer workers had kept the company’s three wash plants ticking over while customers were supplied from stockpiles.

Under the terms of a two-year agreement, a wage increase of 8% was agreed for 2013/14 for Somkhele’s lowest-paid workers, with a further 7.5% increase for 2014/15. Other pay grades received negotiated increases of 5.5% to 7%, the company said.
