AMCU seeks to extend strike to gold, coal

[miningmx.com] – THE Association of Mineworkers & Construction Union (AMCU) wants to apply to the National Economic Development and Labour Council (Nedlac) to extend the strike in the South African platinum sector to the country’s gold and coal industries, said BDLive.

Speaking during a march to the offices of Impala Platinum in Johannesburg yesterday (March 27), Joseph Mathunjwa, president of AMCU, said Nedlac would “release us so that all our members can form a solidarity strike”.

However, BDLive said such an application to Nedlac was unlikely to succeed. Citing independent labour law expert, Tony Healy, BDLive said such an action was unprecedented.
