Zimbabwe wary of resuming chrome exports

[miningmx.com] – BOWING to pressure to resume chrome exports would discourage investors from entering into minerals beneficiation in Zimbabwe, said Bloomberg News citing the country’s mines minister, Walter Chidakwa.

Chidakwa told the news wire that “huge” external demand for chrome ore had renewed calls for the government to consider reconsidering its decision to ban exports of the mineral. “Everybody is looking for raw chrome on the market,” he said.

“It’s not going to be easy for us to relax the ban. To open the window for ore exports when we have said we want beneficiation, we will be sending a message that there is no need for value addition,” said Chidakwa.”

It might discourage investors willing to go into value addition,’ he said.
