SA gold sector would be devastated by strike

[miningmx.com] – SOUTH Africa’s gold mining companies would not be able to sustain the strike activity seen in the platinum industry, said BDLive citing Elize Strydom, chief negotiator for the Chamber of Mines of South Africa.

The Association of Mineworkers & Construction Union (AMCU) and gold producers have met at the Labour Court to hear whether AMCU can successfully appeal an application that it members have the right to strike despite gold industry central bargaining agreeing a 9% wage increase for the sector last year.

“A strike would be devastating (in the gold sector), and definitely, we wouldn’t be able to sustain the kind of strike action we have seen in the platinum sector,” Strydom told BDLive.
