Jonas, Nel joined Northam board as non-executive directors

FORMER deputy finance minister for South Africa, Mcebisi Jonas, has joined the board of Northam Platinum as an independent non-executive director, the company said today in an announcement to the JSE.

Mcebesi will join another new Northam appointment in Jean Nel, the former CEO of Aquarius Platinum prior to its buy-out by Sibanye-Stillwater. Nel is currently a non-executive director at Mimosa Holdings which owns the Mimosa mine in Zimbabwe.

“Northam is pleased to welcome Messr Mcebisi Jonas and Jean Nel to the board,” said Northam chairman, Brian Mosehla in the announcement. “They bring extensive additional experience and expertise to Northam which will further strengthen the board’s diversity and independence,” he added.

Jonas recently submitted testimony to the Zondo Commission, established by South African president, Cyril Ramaphosa, to investigate allegations of State Capture. Jonas said he had been offered R600m to work for the Gupta family in the position of finance minister – an offer he turned down.

Northam is scheduled to report its annual financial results ended June 30 on September 7.
