Thermal coal “in constant state of decline or decay,” says former US coal executive

A FORMER coal industry executive, Kevin Crutchfield, who has now moved into salt mining, said in a report by Bloomberg News republished on Yahoo News that thermal coal was “… in a constant state of decline or decay”.

Commenting on two decades in the coal industry, including stints as CEO of Contura Energy and Alpha Natural Resources, Crutchfield said: “You felt like you were working really hard to create value but there was no recognition of it in the public markets. The free markets have decided we don’t need as much coal as we used to.”
