SA crude steel output doubles

[miningmx.com] — SOUTH AFRICAN crude steel production was up 51.1% year-on-year to an estimated 710 000 metric tonnes in January, the World Steel Association reported on Monday.

Crude steel output was 470 000 metric tonnes in January 2009 and an estimated 700 000 metric tonnes in December 2009, reflecting the country’s increased capacity utilisation as steel demand has picked up globally.

African crude steel production was 21.1% up year-on-year to 1.29 million metric tonnes in January 2010 from 1.07 million metric tonnes in January last year.

This is however lower than December’s production of 1.36 million metric tonnes.

World crude steel production for the 66 countries reporting to the World Steel Association was 108.9 million metric tonnes in January – a 25.5% increase on the 86.8 million metric tonnes produced in January 2009.
