More coal for Eskom’s Majuba power station

[miningmx.com] — TRANSNET Freight Rail announced on Wednesday that its transportation of domestic coal from mines in the Mpumalanga province to Eskom’s Majuba Power Station has grown by 36% from last year’s throughput of 5.8 million tons.

Majuba is one of electricity parastatal Eskom’s stations responsible for generating the power consumed in the country.

Transnet Freight Rail said in a statement that the Majuba project had seen a consistent weekly average performance of 155,000 tons in recent weeks, which culminated in an all time record of 170,000 tons in the 28th week.

“The company’s year to date performance for coal to Majuba stands at 7.8mt, with six months still left before the end of the financial year,” it said in a statement.

Acting TFR chief executive Tau Morwe said that the next target for TFR is the delivery of eight million tons by March 2011.
