Num prepares for Exxaro strike

[miningmx.com] — THE National Union of Mineworkers (Num) said on Wednesday a majority of its members at Exxaro had so far voted in favour of a strike over planned retrenchments at the company.

The voting will conclude later on Wednesday.

Exxaro, which mines for coal, zinc and mineral sands, said in November last year it might cut up to 300 jobs as it seeks to improve productivity and reduce costs of services and operations. The company employs some 10,500 people.

“The voting is still going on, but so far the majority of those balloted are for a strike action,” Num spokesperson Lesiba Seshoka said.

The union said more than 7,000 of its members were employed by Exxaro.

“It will be an indefinite strike action until Exxaro agrees to what we are saying,” Seshoka said.

The union needs to give the company 48 hours notice before any industrial action can begin.
