Anglo mulls power plant bids – Business Day

[miningmx.com] — ANGLO American could this year appoint a service provider to build a 450MW power plant to take pressure off its platinum subsidiary’s electricity constraints and ease its cost pressures, Norman Mbazima, CEO of Anglo’s thermal coal division, told Business Day in an interview published on Wednesday.

Seven parties had bid to build the plant near Witbank at a cost of more than $1bn and Anglo Thermal Coal was now in discussions with the various parties on pricing structures and financing, Mr Mbazima said.

The project is designed to reduce Anglo American Platinum’s reliance on Eskom and shield it from regular large price increases.
