Kalahari ‘hijackers’ arrested

[miningmx.com] — THE alleged hijackers of mining firm Kalahari Resources have been arrested and will appear in the Pretoria Commercial Crimes Court on fraud charges.

The South African Police Service confirmed on Wednesday that Stephen Khoza, Haralambos Sferopoulos and Elvis Bongani Ndala were arrested for their alleged role in the “removal’ of the directors of Kalahari Resources from the Companies and Intellectual Property Registrations Office (Cipro) database.

“We are on the way to court right now,’ said arresting officer Captain Nhlapo of the Commercial Crimes Unit.

Nhlapo also said he was hot on the heels of the most prominent of the alleged hijackers, Sandi Majali of Imvume Resources. “He has just phoned one of the suspects I have with me and said he was on his way to hand himself over,’ said Nhlapo.

The suspects allegedly illegally removed the directors of Kalahari Resources from Cipro’s records in early August, replacing their names with those of their own and four other unknown individuals.

The South Gauteng High Court ruled in September that Cipro had to reinstate legitimate chairperson Daphne Mashile-Nkosi.

Mashile-Nkosi and her colleagues were also awarded legal costs.

Majali blamed the crime on his colleagues, telling the court he only sought advice from Haralambos and had nothing to do with the crime.

Kalahari Resources owns 40% of Kgalagadi Manganese, an R11bn joint venture with ArcelorMittal on the Kalahari Basin in the Northern Cape.
