Xstrata-Merafe to operate at 65% capacity

[miningmx.com] –THE Xstrata-Merafe Chrome Venture, which supplies around 20% of the world’s ferrochrome requirements, on Thursday advised that it would operate on average at 65% of capacity during winter.

A total of 10 furnaces will undergo routine maintenance at various times during the
next three months, the company said.

It added that it has chosen to undertake the maintenance during winter to mitigate
the higher than average winter electricity supply tariffs.

Merafe Resources (MRF) last month reported that ferrochrome production for the
Xstrata-Merafe Chrome Venture increased 316% for the first quarter of 2010
compared to the same period in 2009.

Attributable production came in at 79 000t for the first quarter of 2010, compared
to 19 000t for the first quarter of 2009.
