Second Harmony miner found dead

[miningmx.com] — The search for the remaining missing miner at the Bambanani Mine in the Free State has ended with the recovery of his remains, the deparment of mineral resources said on Wednesday.

One miner died and several others were rescued following a seismically-induced rockfall at the East Shaft of Harmony Gold’s Bambanani Mine near Welkom on Monday.

The recovery of the body of the missing miner brings the death toll in the incident to two.

“The department extends its sincere condolences to the family of the deceased,” said departmental spokesperson Zingaphi Jakuja.

Earlier, Harmony Gold said six miners were brought to the surface soon after the seismic event. Three were hospitalised.

One was in a critical but stable condition and the other two were in a satisfactory condition.

The mining house said the rescue work was hampered both by the volume of fallen rock and the restricted space.
