Harmony deplores deaths at Kusasalethu

[miningmx.com] – HARMONY GOLD CEO, Graham Briggs, said he deplored the violence that resulted in the death of two employees, and the injury of another in an incident near its Kusasalethu mine in Carletonville.

“Harmony deplores the tragic and senseless loss of life in what appears to be inter-union rivalry, not associated with the operations of the mine,” Briggs said in a statement today.

The violence comes as Harmony is undertaking a process of verifying membership for new union, the Associated Mineworkers & Construction Union (Amcu), which has applied for recognition rights at the mine.

Production at Kusasalethu was unaffected by the incident, Harmony said.
