[miningmx.com] — ANGLOGOLD Ashanti has advised that an employee died on Wednesday in an underground accident at its Kopanang mine near Klerksdorp.
The deceased, a scraper winch operator who has worked for the company for 26 years, was fatally injured in a fall of ground, the company said in a statement.
A team representing the Department of Minerals Resources inspectorate is expected to visit the mine on Thursday to begin an investigation. The mine has meanwhile suspended drilling and blasting activities, continuing only with work to strengthen underground support and other safety-related activities.
Attempts are being made to contact the next of kin of the deceased, who live in Mozambique, the gold miner said.
