Harmony restarts Hidden Valley after quake

[miningmx.com] — HARMONY Gold Mining Company, South Africa’s third largest gold producer, on Thursday said the Hidden Valley mine in Papua New Guinea (PNG) had restarted mining activities after operations were temporarily suspended on Wednesday.

The company halted operations after a 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck PNG early on Wednesday morning.

While Hidden Valley was built to withstand the impacts of earthquakes, Harmony said a thorough geotechnical and structural evaluation was being conducted before operations could be resumed.

The mine is operated in partnership with Newcrest Mining.

“There have been no injuries and investigations have identified no major damage,” the company said on Thursday.
