Tribunal allows intervention in Petmin case

[miningmx.com] — TWO players in the silica market have been granted leave to intervene in proceedings at the Competition Tribunal in which JSE-listed miner Petmin and Thaba Chueu Mining are appealing against the blocking of the proposed R259m sale of Petmin’s SamQuarz silica mine to Thaba, Business Day reported on Tuesday.

The tribunal on Monday granted Sublime Technologies and Silicon Technology the right to participate in the proceeding in which it will determine whether the Competition Commission erred, or not, in prohibiting the merger.

The commission said in January approving the move would remove an independent silica supplier from the market and enable the buyer to control the critical input of its downstream competitors.
