Num declares dispute with Northam

[miningmx.com] — THE National Union of Mineworkers (Num) has declared an internal dispute with Northam Platinum over the company’s reluctance to bargain, the union said on Tuesday.

It said it had approached the platinum producer a number of times for bargaining purposes, but was sent from pillar to post.

“We have now declared a formal internal dispute in terms of their procedures. Should they fail to bargain or continue to beat about the bush, we will take the matter to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration,” said Zwelitsha Tantsi, Num’s chief negotiator at Northam Platinum.

The union represents 89% of Northam’s 8,000 workers.

“We hope to meet the company on July 26 and we hope that this time around they will face the realities,” said Tantsi.
