Godongwana stays as state intervention ‘chief’

[miningmx.com] — ENOCH Godongwana, who was serving his last day as Deputy Minister of Economic Development on Monday, would remain in his position as head of the ANC’s economic transformation committee – the body that would handle the ruling party’s report on state intervention in the mining industry.

The Presidency released a statement on Sunday saying Godongwana has resigned his position as deputy minister to “pursue personal interests’.

“He informed President Zuma of his intention early in December and the President asked him to stay on until mid-January,’ read the statement. “Mr Godongwana’s last day will be the 16th of January.’

ANC spokesperson Keith Khoza told Miningmx on Monday Godongwana would continue to chair the economic transformation committee. The committee is tasked to process the report of the ANC commission on state intervention in the mining industry into resolutions for adoption at its national conference in December.

The report was presented at the ANC’s national executive committee meeting in November, but had been referred back to the commission to be redrafted in simpler language and to expand case studies in the 13 countries the commissioners visited.
Khoza said the report would again be submitted to the NEC when the body meets later this month or early February.

Godongwana was general secretary of the National Union of Metalworkers (Numsa) before he was appointed as MEC for economic development and finance in the Eastern Cape. He was made Deputy Minister of Public Enterprises in 2009, before moving to the economic development portfolio in 2010.
